Subjects

62 women aged 40-55 years, of Fitzpatrick phototypes II, III or IV, and with moderate to severe wrinkles in the crow's feet area.

Regimen

Volunteers applied either the Alyria Intense Wrinkle Correction cream or the StriVectin-SD facial cream sparingly twice a day (morning and night), and massaged vigorously in a circular motion until absorbed.

Prolifometry of the eye contour area

Digital image analysis of silicon replicas of the crow's feet to obtain skin topography

Subjects' self-evaluation questionnaire on the perceived efficacy of product claims

Side Effects

Subjects reported minor discomfort (redness and a prickling and burning sensation), particularly around the eyes and lips, but these were temporary and lasted only the first few days of use. >20% of the volunteers assigned to use the StriVectin-SD product reported developing pimples.

Study was sponsored by Canderm Pharma, which markets the Alyria products, and the author is a consultant for the company.

Effects observed in this study:

Alyria Intense Wrinkle Correction:

The number of wrinkles decreased by 12% after 2 months and by 25% after 3 months. When the wrinkles were classified by depth, there was a 25% reduction in the number of class 1 wrinkles (0-55 μm), a 27% reduction in the number of class 2 wrinkles ( 55-100 μm) and a 23% reduction in the number of class 3 wrinkles (110-800 μm).

Wrinkle area too declined by 17% after the first month and was 39% lower by the end of the study. In addition, the total length of the wrinkles on patients using this product was significantly reduced by 11% and 37% over the same time periods, while the mean wrinkle length dropped by 18% after treatment. Individual results went as high as a 66% reduction in wrinkle number, a 80% decline in wrinkle surface area and a 54% decrease in mean wrinkle length.

These changes were progressive and were all statistically significant compared to baseline. A between groups comparison appears to have been conducted, but the results were not mentioned.

StriVectin-SD:

At the end of the 12 weeks, the total number of wrinkles had declined by 14%. The number of class 1 wrinkles dropped by 23% and the number of class 2 wrinkles by 14%, but no significant reduction was seen for the class 3 wrinkles, which were the deepest. The total area occupied by wrinkles also decreased by 15%, while the the total length of the wrinkles on patients using this product dropped by 18%. On average, wrinkle length was reduced by 10% at the end of the treatment.

These improvements were statistically significant compared to baseline, but were not progressive.
