Subjects

1462 men and women mainly of Fitzpatrick phototypes II and III, aged above 45 years, presenting facial areas with clinical signs of skin aging such as loss of firmness, furrows, wrinkles, fine lines and pigmentary changes.

Regimen

Group 1: Applied moisturizer in the morning and Avène Eluage Cream to the face and neck in the evening.

Group 2: Applied moisturizer in the morning and Avène Eluage Anti-wrinkle Concentrate on areas with deep wrinkles/furrows in the evening.

Group 3: Applied moisturizer in the morning and both products (cream before concentrate) in the evening.

Methods of Assessment

Overall photoaging: Larnier's scale, a 6-point photographic scale in which each grade is depicted by standardized photographs of 3 representative patients.

Clinical signs of aging: Evaluated by dermatologists using a 4-point scale.

Wrinkles: Optical profilometry on silicone skin replicas and digital analysis of resulting skin surface images.

Complexion evenness: Assessed by dermatologists using a 10-point visual analogue scale.

Side Effects

Not documented, but 96-98% of subjects found the products to be well- or very well-tolerated.

Conflicts of Interest

1 out of the 9 authors was an employee of Laboratoires Dermatologiques Avène.

Effects observed in this study:

The overall severity of photoaging declined by 15-19% after 90 days in all 3 groups. The anti-wrinkle concentrate led to crow's feet, nasolabial folds and wrinkles on the forehead, glabellas and around the mouth becoming less visible. Analysis of the crow's feet replicas showed significant decreases in skin roughness and wrinkle depth in subjects who used both products.

In Groups 1 and 3, skin dryness decreased by 62-65%, hyperpigmentation by 31-34%, and ptosis of the face oval by 18-22% post-treatment, while the elasticity of the skin improved by 32-33%. The evenness of the complexion improved by 33-38% in subjects using either product, which increased to 53% in subjects using both products.
