Clinical Studies

The effect of Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser on the skin barrier of patients with rosacea.

Products

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

Dove Sensitive Skin Bar

Trial Design

Uncontrolled

Duration

2 week washout period, followed by a 2 week study period.

Subjects

30 patients with mild to moderate rosacea.

Regimen

In the initial 2 week washout period, patients cleansed twice daily with Dove Sensitive Skin Bar. During the study period, they switched to using the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser.

Methods of Assessment

Skin barrier function monitored through transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and corneometry.

Investigator assessments of rosacea severity.

Side Effects

No adverse events were reported.

Effects observed in this study:

Transepidermal water loss did not increase significantly at any point during the study, indicating that the cleanser did not damage the skin barrier. It also maintained skin hydration. Furthermore, rosacea severity on the cheeks, forehead and nose declined significantly at the end of the first week of treatment and on the cheeks, forehead and chin at the end of the second week, compared to at the end of the washout period, despite the patients not being actively treated for their rosacea during this period.

A simple treatment for head lice: dry-on, suffocation-based pediculicide.

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

Trial Design

Open, uncontrolled

Duration

Maximum of 3 weeks for treatment, with a follow-up visit for re-evaluation at 6 months.

Subjects

93 subjects with head lice in the first trial and 40 subjects in the second trial. More than half of the subjects had had unsuccessful treatments prior to entering the study.

Regimen

Patients applied the lotion to their hair once weekly until cure was achieved, up to a maximum of 3 applications. Each time, they waited for 2 minutes after thoroughly applying the lotion before combing it out, drying the hair with a handheld hair dryer, and shampooed 8 or more hours later.

For trial 1, parents were also instructed to remove nits while combing out the lotion, first with a widely spaced detangler comb, then a standard spaced pocket comb, and finally a closely spaced, metal-toothed nit removal comb. For trial 2, parents used only the detangler and pocket combs.

At the time of the lotion application, each subject's combs, brushes, pillowcase, sheets, blankets, comforter and bedspreads were also cleaned, and they changed into fresh clothes.

Methods of Assessment

The wet combing test was used to determine the presence or absence of infestations. Parents brought the combed-out lotion on absorbent pads in sealed plastic bags to the clinic for the author to assess. An active infestation was defined as present when lice was found.

Side Effects

None reported.

Conflicts of Interest

The author of the study repackaged and sold Cetaphil Skin Cleanser as Nuvo lotion, a non-toxic cure for head lice.

Effects observed in this study:

97% of the 93 patients from the first trial were cured after 3 or fewer applications. 82 patients were re-evaluated during a follow-up visit 6 months later, where 94% were reported to be lice-free. In the second trial, 95% of the 40 patients who completed the treatment were cured, and 38 of these were available for re-evaluation at 6 months, when 95% were found to still be lice-free. There was no statistical difference between the 2 trials in either the cure rate or the long-term remission rate.

Patients also reported that the amount of work and time required to perform the treatment was >50% less than their previous experiences with other treatments.
