Clinical Studies

Efficacy of micronutrient supplementation on skin aging and seasonal variation: a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study.

Products

Perfectil Platinum

Trial Design

Randomized, single-center, double-blind, placebo-controlled

Duration

4 months of treatment and an additional follow-up 6 weeks post-treatment.

Subjects

80 Caucasian women aged 35-55 years with Fitzpatrick phototype II, III or IV skin and significant photoaging of the face.

Regimen

Subjects took 2 tablets of Perfectil Platinum once daily with their main meal and uses only basic moisturizing products for daily skin care.

Methods of Assessment

Skin pseudoroughness (deep wrinkles) and microrelief (fine line and wrinkles) evaluated by Visioscan. Skin roughness and wrinkles were also calculated using the Surface Evaluation of Living Skin (SELS) method.

Evaluation of standardized photographs of the face by a panel of experienced professionals, according to a 6-grade photographic scale of the overall severity of facial photodamage.

Skin viscoelasticity assessed by Reviscometer, which measures the propagation velocity of acoustic shockwaves.

Measurement of skin thickness and density by skin high-frequency ultrasound.

Subjects' self-evaluation questionnaire.

Side Effects

1 subject terminated the study prematurely because of intolerance to the placebo tablet. No serious side effects were observed.

Conflicts of Interest

None declared.

Effects observed in this study:

All but one of the skin pseudoroughness and microrelief indicators were increased significantly between baseline after 4 months of supplementation with the placebo, unlike in the active group where there were no adverse changes. The SELS parameters were not significantly affected.

Skin anisotropy of the unexposed forearm did not change significantly in either group, but it declined dramatically only in the active group after 4 months of treatment and at the follow-up visit.

The thickness of the forearm skin, which is not exposed, was not significantly different between the 2 groups, but the thickness of the skin of the hand, which is exposed, decreased significantly only in the placebo group.

Overall facial photodamage was not affected in either the active group or the placebo group. Some patients in the active group noted improvements in skin elasticity, firmness, dryness or roughness, but these did not reach statistical significance.
