Low-Concentration Retinol Study: Randomized, double-blind, controlled

Duration

Pilot Study: 8 weeks or 12 weeks

Low-Concentration Retinol Study: 8 weeks

Subjects

Pilot Study: 11 subjects with moderate to severe photodamage or wrinkles.

Low-Concentration Retinol Study: 30 women aged 36-63 years, of Fitzpatrick phototypes II or III and with moderate to severe facial photodamage and facial wrinkles.

Regimen

Low-Concentration Retinol Study: Applied Cetaphil cleanser and sunblock (SPF 30) to the face each morning and Cetaphil cleanser, moisturizer and Retriderm Serum or the vehicle to the face each evening

Methods of Assessment

Overall photodamage: Assessed using Glogau's 4-point scale

Wrinkles: Assessed using Rao-Goldman 5-point scale and photogenerated scores by the VISIA system

UV spots: Assessed using photogenerated scores by the VISIA system

Signs of photoaging: Graded on a 5-point scale

Facial skin quality: Subjects' self-evaluations

Side Effects

Pilot Study: Subjects informally reported some irritation to the skin.

Low-Concentration Retinol Study: Burning, dryness, itching and redness were negligible in most cases and only occasionally mild.

Effects observed in this study:

Pilot study (Retriderm ULTRA)

All subjects had improved in overall photodamage, all had reduced crow's feet, 90% had reduced cheek wrinkles and 70% had reduced under-eye and forehead wrinkles. All subjects also had improved skin elasticity as assessed by investigators, and half of the subjects reported at least a 1-grade improvement in the suppleness of their skin.

Investigators found increased skin brightness in 90% of subjects and a decrease of mottled pigmentation in 80% of subjects. 50% and 25% of subjects also noted at least 1-grade improvements in the lustre and colour of their skin, respectively. 40% of subjects were considered to have reduced skin roughness according to investigator assessments.

Low-concentration retinol study (Retriderm Serum)

Hyperpigmentation was significantly lower compared to treatment with the vehicle, and when compared to pre-treatment levels. The improvement of actinic keratoses was significantly superior to that of the vehicle, and when compared to pre-treatment scores.

However, improvements in skin laxity, roughness, moistness, oiliness, texture, thickness and wrinkles were not significantly different from that observed with vehicle treatment. VISIA analysis of wrinkles and spots also found no significant differences from baseline at the end of 8 weeks.
