Duration

Subjects

82 men and women aged 25-60 years, who had moderate facial dyschromia, mild-to-moderate fine lines and wrinkles and a lack of skin firmness

Regimen

Used SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector twice daily, or the generic hydroquinone cream and 0.025% tretinoin cream once nightly, after cleansing. Also applied the SPF 30 moisturizer in the morning and as needed.

Methods of Assessment

Investigator assessments of dark spot size, dark spot intensity, hyperpigmentation, visual smoothness, tactile smoothness, skin tone clarity, skin tone evenness, firmness, radiance/brightness, imperfections/blotchiness and overall facial appearance.

Measurements of skin hydration by corneometry.

High-resolution digital photographs of the frontal, right and left face.

Side Effects

4 subjects using hydroquinone + tretinoin dropped out of the study due to intense irritation. Skin dryness, peeling and erythema all appeared to be substantially lower over the course of the treatment in those treated with the Advanced Pigment Corrector compared to those treated with hydroquinone and tretinoin.

Conflicts of Interest

4 of the 6 authors worked for L'Oreal, which owns the SkinCeuticals brand, and 1 worked for SkinCeuticals.

Effects observed in this study:

The SkinCeuticals Advanced Skin Pigment Corrector product led to a 19% decrease in spot intensity, a 15% decrease in spot size and a 14% decrease in pigmentation. This compares well with the prescription hydroquinone + tretinoin formulation, which produced a 20% decrease in spot intensity, a 13% decrease in spot size and a 10% decrease in pigmentation.

SkinCeuticals Advanced Skin Pigment Corrector also resulted in a greater improvements in visual smoothness (52% versus 35%), tactile smoothness (59% versus 41%), clarity (27% versus 22%), evenness of the skin tone (18% versus 16%), skin imperfections (18% versus 8%), radiance (22% versus 16%) and firmness (17% versus 9%).

All of the reported improvements were changes from baseline.
