Astragaloside IV is a major compound derived from the Mongolian milkvetch Astragalus membranaceus, a flowering plant found in Kazakhstan, Mongolia and parts of China and Russia. It was recorded in a famous medical book in ancient China as early as 200 AD (R) and its dried roots, called Astragali Radix or Huangqi, is considered a high-grade traditional Chinese herbal medicine (R, R).
Astragaloside IV has anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, antioxidative, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, cardioprotective and neuroprotective effects, and has been reported to be effective at treating various diseases (R).
