Thyme extract is obtained from Thymus vulgaris, a culinary herb native to the Mediterranean that also has a long history of use as a medicinal plant (R). It is rich in the compounds thymol and carvacrol (R), both of which possess antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory activities (R, R).
Topically applied carvacrol has been shown to penetrate into the deeper parts of the dermis, where it accumulates (R). Both it and thymol can also be used as penetration enhancers (R, R).
