Alpha-ketoglutarate is an important intermediate in the Krebs cycle, a key metabolic pathway driving the generation of mitochondrial energy in cells (R). It is also involved in the synthesis of collagen (R) and amino acids (R), and the epigenetic regulation of gene expression (R, R, R). Interestingly, it has been demonstrated to extend the lifespan of several organisms, including roundworms (R), fruit flies (R) and mice (R).
Alpha-ketoglutarate can be dissolved in water and has great stability in aqueous solutions (R).
