Marigold extract is obtained from Calendula officinalis, a popular medicinal plant that has been used for millenia. It contains many compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, carotenoids and sterols, that give it myriad capabilities as a traditional medicine, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing effects (R).
The caffeic acid and ferulic acid contained in marigold extract have been shown to be retained in the stratum corneum of the skin, whereas chlorogenic acid was able to penetrate more deeply into the stratum spinosum (R).
