The lotus is a perennial aquatic plant that is native to south Asia, northern Australia, and Russia (R). It is valued for its ornamental, nutritional and medicinal values (R), which may be due to its active constituents such as alkaloids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, and terpenoids (R). These have been isolated from all parts of the lotus plant, including the leaves, seeds, flowers and rhizomes (R).
A water-based cream containing 4% lotus extract has been shown to remain stable for 30 days under refrigeration, and even at temperatures up to 50°C (R).
